Local capture and editing work without a Behold account. Cloud features require an account. Requires macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon or Intel.

From download to your first capture.

  1. 01

    Install once

Open the downloaded disk image. Drag Beholder into Applications, eject the disk, then open Beholder from Applications. Look for the viewfinder icon in your menu bar.

  2. 02

    Allow screen access

The welcome guide explains Screen Recording permission. Allow Beholder in System Settings. If macOS asks you to quit and reopen, do that before your first capture.

  3. 03

    Capture something

Choose Capture Area from the guide or menu bar, then drag. Escape cancels. Use the preview to edit or copy. Your screenshots save in Pictures → Beholder.

Your Mac first. Behold when you’re ready.

Choose Connect & Sync in setup to approve this Mac in your browser. The pairing code stays visible in Beholder, so you won’t have to hunt for it after signing in.

Connecting uploads captures waiting on this Mac and syncs future captures to your private Behold library.

Share creates a public link. Anyone with that link can open it. Review your screenshot before sharing.

A little help getting started.

I opened Beholder, but can’t find a window.

Beholder lives in the viewfinder icon in the menu bar. Choose Welcome & Setup to reopen the guide, or Captures to open your library.

I dismissed the permission prompt.

Open Welcome & Setup from the menu bar and choose Open Settings on the permission step. Find Beholder under Privacy & Security → Screen Recording (or Screen & System Audio Recording). Enable it and reopen the app if asked.

Where did my screenshot go?

Local screenshots save to Pictures → Beholder. The Captures window also has a Screenshot Folder button. Cloud captures appear after you connect and the upload completes; the menu bar reports pending or failed uploads.

How do I update or remove Beholder?

For updates, quit Beholder, download the new version here, and replace the app in Applications. To remove it, quit and move the app to Trash. Your saved screenshots remain in Pictures → Beholder. Manage or revoke your Mac’s cloud access from Behold’s Devices page.
